I unclipped my belt so I could turn and take Alanna in. She was sitting very straight in her seat, staring out the front window with determination. Her hands were clenched into fists on her thighs.

“Dorogiya-,” I started.

“Don’t pity me. I’m fine.” Her voice was threatening, a hard veneer over a broken picture. I swallowed the knot in my throat. Her story had ripped me in half, yet, she didn’t want pity, and I wouldn’t be the one to make her more upset.

“I don’t pity you, Alanna. I admire you,” I said quietly. Her mouth pulled into a bitter smile.

“Don’t lie to me either. I don’t like it.”

“I respect you too much to lie to you.” I could see that she didn’t believe me, too trapped in her own head and her past. I wanted to break her from it. “If you want brutal honesty from me, you’ll get it. I admire you because you’re strong. I like strong women. I like you. I admire you because, despite your past, you’re positive and confident, and you stand up for yourself, and those you represent. I admire you because despite that fucking horrifying story, you still take the elevator at work, you go to therapy, you face your fears head-on. That’s strength, and it’s sexy. You’re sexy, the sexiest woman I’ve ever met, and if you decided to touch me right now, you’d find me hard. Harder than I’ve ever been, for longer than I’ve ever been. Hard since yesterday in the stairs, hell, hard since I held you in the elevator.” My voice was gruff with desire now, my body fully aware of how close she was sitting, of the pulse pounding in her throat, and the way her eyes had slid down my body when I’d mentioned my hard-on. “I won’t ever lie to you, so believe me when I say I want you, beyond reason, or rationale. I’m here to see you, and the office could burn down for all I care, as long as you’re here with me. How’s that for honesty?” I asked roughly, coming to the end of my patience with not touching her. I reached out, and took her chin in my fingers, cupping her cheek. Her eyes stayed fixed on me with curiosity, as though she couldn’t quite believe my words, after what she’d told me. As though I’d think less of her. “I want you, Alanna, and I’m here to win you, and I won’t be leaving until I do. What do you think of my honesty now?” I demanded.

“It’s a bit much,” she finally said, puncturing the building tension between us. I laughed, a hearty sound, ripped right from my chest. I leaned in and rested my forehead against hers, and to my satisfaction, she didn’t move away.

“I’m a bit much. You’ll get used to me,” I told her. I wanted to kiss her, now, but I became gradually aware of the fact that we were sitting on a small hard shoulder, with other cars and trucks zooming past us.
